Circulation Policy and Procedure Changes

Information

Home > About > Policy Changes

Effective January 1, 2008

DVDs
The limits of DVD checkouts will increase to 5 per library card. DVDs will be renewable for one (1) 7-day period provided the items are not on request.

Grace Period
A 6-day grace period for returning materials will be instituted for a 6-month trial period. The grace period will be for 14-day items only. Fines are not charged for Sundays or holidays. Fines will start accruing as soon as the item is over due, but will not be collected until the grace period has ended.

Fines
Fines are charged as a small incentive to encourage customers to return borrowed materials on time. The Library reviews fine amounts periodically as the cost of materials increases. The fine for 14-day items checked out from branches or community bookmobiles will increase 15¢ per item per day (maximum of $5 per item per checkout). The fine for items issued for fewer than 14 days will remain at 25¢ per item per day (maximum of $10 per item per checkout).

Maximum Fine
The maximum amount of fines and/or billed items allowed on a library card is $15. Fines of $15 or more must be paid before the card can be used again.

Renewing Library Cards
Library cards are issued to residents of St. Louis County Library District for a period of two years. Non-resident cards are issued for 1 year. A photo ID and proof of current address is required for library card renewal. In addition, all customers will be asked to clear fines at or before the time they renew their card.

Refunds
A $5 handling fee will be charged for each Lost & Paid refund issued.

Requests
The maximum number of holds that a customer can have at any one time is 25. We will continue to fill requests in excess of 25 that were place prior to January 1, 2008 but customers who have over 25 holds at that time will not be able to place any additional requests until they are below the minimum.

Library Elf
Library Elf is a third party service that will send library users an e-mail before their items are due. There is no cost to the Library or to the customer. To sign up for this free service or for more information visit: http://libraryelf.com.
