Catholic Priests of St. Louis, Missouri
As Listed in the City Directories of 1870-1900

The following lists were prepared in hopes of being an aid in locating the church at which a Catholic priest served, especially when he signed only his name to marriage licenses or other documents.

These lists cover the time period of 1870 through the year 1900, with the exception of 1871 and 1873, which were not available. Included in the list are sextons or assistants which may have been included in the Directory listing. Allowance should be made for the various spellings of some names, and also the initials shown. The usual spelling errors and typesetting errors prevail as in all City Directories.

Dates shown for the time periods a priest served at one church may not necessarily be conclusive. Not every priest was listed every year.

Names of some of the churches were shortened or altered in the Directories. Most notable were the following, but not for every year listed above:

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, shown as, Our Lady of Perpetual Succor.
St. Cronan, shown as, St. Cronin.
St. Mark, shown as, St. Marc.
St. Mary of Victories, shown as, St. Mary's.
St. Teresa, shown as, St. Theresa.
Sts. Mary and Joseph, shown as St. Mary's.

During some years of issue only the name of the church, the address, and the hours of service were listed, and excluded the names of the priest. Several churches listed only the name of the "order" serving that church, rather than the names of the priest. Notable among these churches were St. Anthony (Fathers of Franciscan Convent) and St. Alphonsus (Redemptorist Fathers). These listing were inconsistent, however. One year the priest were listed, the next year none were shown.

St. Ann, in the county, disappeared from the listings in 1892.
