St. Louis Enlistees Extracted from
Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914
1855

This name index was created by the staff of the Special Collections Department to enable a search for enlistees with a St. Louis connection in the 1855 record of Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914. The 700+ entries are listed alphabetically by surname, then given name.

Criteria for Inclusion
These extracted names were taken from the National Archives microfilm set  M233, Registers of Enlistments in the United States Army, 1798-1914.  The information in this microfilm set was compiled from enlistment papers, muster rolls of the Regular Army, and other sources. The names included in the extracted set below include ONLY enlistees who were either born in St. Louis, Mo., or who enlisted at St. Louis or at Jefferson Barracks (shown as Jeff Bks in the chart below) which is located in St. Louis County.

Keep in mind the difference between the Regular Army and the Volunteer Army. When a man enlisted in the Regular Army, he served continuously for his enlistment period whether the country was at war or not. A Volunteer Army was raised only in time of war.

What the Records Tell
A significant number of men who enlisted in the Regular Army were immigrants. In many cases, when an immigrant enlistee gave his place of birth - he gave the name of the town or village in his home country where he was born. Headings on the enlistment forms include the following:

  • Name
  • Where born - town, county or province, state; Empire or Kingdom
  • Age in years
  • Trade or Occupation
  • Enlistment information - when, where (town and state); by whom; period of years
  • Description - eyes, hair, complexion, height, feet, inches
  • Regiment and company
  • Discharge - date of, cause of
  • Died [if death occurred while in the military]
  • Deserted (if applicable)
  • Apprehended (if applicable)
  • Number of enlistments, company and regiment last served in
  • Remarks
