This name index was created by the
staff of the Special Collections Department to enable a search for enlistees
with a St. Louis connection in the 1855 record of Registers of Enlistments in
the U.S. Army, 1798-1914. The 700+ entries are listed alphabetically by
surname, then given name.
Criteria for Inclusion
These extracted names were taken from the National Archives microfilm set
M233, Registers of Enlistments in the United States Army, 1798-1914.
The information in this microfilm set was compiled from enlistment papers,
muster rolls of the Regular Army, and other sources. The names included in the
extracted set below include ONLY enlistees who were either born in St. Louis,
Mo., or who enlisted at St. Louis or at Jefferson Barracks (shown as Jeff Bks in
the chart below) which is located in St. Louis County.
Keep in mind the difference between the
Regular Army and the Volunteer Army. When a man enlisted in the Regular Army, he
served continuously for his enlistment period whether the country was at war or
not. A Volunteer Army was raised only in time of war.
