Emerson W. Gould,
the author of this book, was a renowned
steamboat captain who had an
overwhelming interest in the industry of
boat building, piloting and river
navigation. He devoted over 120 pages of
this book to biographies of prominent
captains during the era of the
steamboats. These biographies were
written by the retired captain, a
relative or close friend, or by the
author.
Many of the
seventy-eight chapters include letters
written by Captain Gould that were
printed in large newspapers during the
mid to late 1800's regarding the
enhancement of the river ways and the
use of steamboats in transportation.
