Emerson W. Gould, the author of this book, was a renowned steamboat captain who had an overwhelming interest in the industry of boat building, piloting and river navigation. He devoted over 120 pages of this book to biographies of prominent captains during the era of the steamboats. These biographies were written by the retired captain, a relative or close friend, or by the author.

Many of the seventy-eight chapters include letters written by Captain Gould that were printed in large newspapers during the mid to late 1800's regarding the enhancement of the river ways and the use of steamboats in transportation.

Beyond information about people, this is a comprehensive book regarding the rise and fall of steamboat transportation. It is an informative source for
  • types of early watercrafts and their limited river access
  • discovery of steam as a propelling power which broadened travel ability for people and goods in the growing U. S. territory
  • demise of the steamboat as the railroad grew in popularity
The author discusses in detail
  • descriptions of steamboats, when and where built, and the captains who piloted them
  • character and speed of boats during different periods
  • effect of steamboats upon the settlement of the Mississippi Valley
  • floods in the valley for 150 years
  • Mississippi River Commission and its work as well as appropriations by Congress for the improvement of western waterways
