Westliche Post Obituary Example (St. Louis, Missouri) |
| The obituaries in the Westliche Post, a
German-language newspaper published in St. Louis from 1857 to 1938,
contain a wealth of information for researchers.
The Westliche Post is available
on microfilm at St. Louis County Library and the obituaries
from the newspaper are in
the process of being indexed. A bold black line
precedes and follows each obituary. (See image below.) The obituary
column in the Westliche starts with the heading "Todes-Anzeigen,"
which means Death News. The obituaries are written in a Gothic fraktur
script common to that time. To facilitate translation, a list of
words frequently used in a German
obituary is available. A
translation of the first obituary in this example is given below the
image.
