Special Collections
wishes to express appreciation to
Concordia Historical Institute and
Immanuel Lutheran Church for granting
permission to publish this index, and to
Dennis Dean Barten, M.Ed.
for his proofreading assistance.
This name index
was created by the staff of the
Special Collections Department. The
2,500+ entries are listed alphabetically
by surname, then given name. Photocopies
of these baptismal
entries
are available from Special Collections.
Immanuel Lutheran Church is the
second oldest Lutheran congregation in
St. Louis, with Trinity Lutheran being
the first. Immanuel Lutheran was formed
out of Trinity Lutheran and dedicated in
1848 at its original location, Eleventh
Street and Franklin Avenue. It was an
important church in the growing German
community. The baptisms indexed here
cover the years 1848-1869 and may give
quite detailed information in German,
sometimes including the towns of origin
of the parents and occupations. They are
arranged by the
baptismal year with some years of
baptisms interrupted by marriages, deaths and
confirmations, but picking up again
afterwards. The column headings on each
page are as follows:
(Number): Order in which
the baptism was done. Baptisms are
numbered each year, beginning with the
number one and continuing through the
rest of the calendar year.
Geburt (Birth): Actual date of
birth. In most cases it is close to the
date of baptism, but in some cases they
may be years apart.
Taufe (Baptism): Date that the
baptism was performed.
Name (Name): First and middle
names of the child.
Vater (Father): Father's first
name and surname.
Mutter (Mother): Mother's
first name and maiden name.
Pathen (Godparents): The names
of the godparents are listed here.
Locating a Baptism
To locate a baptism one needs only
the year and number of the baptism
(listed as order # in column 3). It
is not uncommon to find spelling
inconsistencies so checking surname
variants is advised.
