Stub from Citizenship Certificate of Harry Steinberg

At the time of naturalization, the actual citizenship certificate was given to the new citizen and the remaining "stub" portion of the certificate was kept by the court. The stub can provide helpful information.

If a man was married, he was to list his wife and minor children. In many cases, the new citizen listed ALL his children - even if they were in their 20s, 30s, and even older. The stub document at the left tells the following key personal items about Harry Steinberg:

  • 35 years of age.

  • Filed his declaration of intention in the Superior Court of Hampden County, Massachusetts on 18 April 1903.

  • Married to Hester, age 34, who lived at 1008 N. 11th Street., St. Louis, Mo.

  • Father of 2 children, 11 year-old Grethel, and 7 year-old Rachel, both living at same address as his wife.

  • Signed his name with a mark.

The certificate number, 67122, was recorded on the back of this proof of declaration of intention record which he filed with his final papers to become a citizen.
