St. Louis, Mo., Naturalization Index
A Project of Special Collections, St. Louis County Library

Clarification:  Naturalizations in St. Louis occurred in both the St. Louis, Missouri Circuit Court and the U.S. Circuit Court. Due to the confusion with "Circuit Court" records, we have revised this page. The correct reference for our indexing project is "U.S. Circuit Court". The index on our web site references the original documents located in the National Archives' Central Plains Region facility in Kansas City and was taken from microfilm of the original documents. This microfilm is in Special Collections.

The naturalizations from the St. Louis, Missouri, Circuit Court are indexed on microfilms available in Special Collections. The index to these naturalizations, all prior to September 1906, is also now available as a searchable database on the St. Louis Genealogical Society's web site as well as on the Missouri State Archives' site

The original Declarations of Intention and Naturalization Papers filed in St.  Louis, Missouri, federal courts (primarily dated 27 Sept 1906 and later) are in the National Archives, Central Plains Region, in Kansas City, Missouri.

About the Project
Every effort has been made to accurately spell names but due to the difficulty in reading the handwriting, it is possible mistakes have been made. There were many instances of multiple spellings of names, such as when the court official spelled the name differently than the spelling used in the signature. Many times a misspelling occurred in the index. We have attempted to include all spellings.

When names were left out of the index, we have added them. Some indexes give the incorrect page number and/or document number; we list only the correct ones. We have found one instance when immigrants signed the wrong document. Both men came to court the same day and the records were sequential in the ledger but each man signed the other’s page. We have listed these problems in the note section of each volume listed.

Photocopies  of Naturalization Records Indexed in the St. Louis Naturalization Index Project are available from Special Collections.

Search Strategies

  1. Browse
You may browse the alphabetical index for each volume by going to the list of volumes indexed before 27 September 1906 or the list of volumes indexed for 27 Sept 1906 and after. Then browse the index for the needed time period if it is available. This is an on-going project and the indexes for new volumes are uploaded as they are completed. Browsing the index is a valuable search strategy since immigrants may have made their declaration of intention under a spelling variation of the surname, or if the handwriting on the declaration could not be correctly interpreted.
  2. Search
To search all volumes at the same time, use the
search engine for the SC website. Keep in mind that the search engine covers all SC web pages, not just those containing the naturalization index. If you are  searching for Oscar Housermann, you could search for
    • just the surname Housermann to see anyone with that surname in the index
    • just the given name Oscar and see all declarants with the first name of Oscar. This would be helpful if you suspect a name change, if the name was misspelled, or if the handwriting on the declaration could not be correctly interpreted.
    • Oscar and Housermann to try to locate the record you want
If you receive a large number of non-relevant hits, review the query language guidelines for using the Boolean keywords of and, or, and not.
