When I read Lois Lowry's "The Giver" in grade school, I remember connecting with it in a way I hadn't with other books, especially ones assigned as homework. The novel continued to linger my thoughts throughout the years, as I wondered what happened to Jonas and Gabriel. Lowry followed up "The Giver" with "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger," which both take place in the same world. Still she never addressed the fate of my favorite characters until now with her newest book, "Son."
"Son" is the story of Claire who grows up in Gathering Blue and, just like Jonas, is assigned a role in community as birth mother. At 14 she gives birth after a difficult pregnancy to baby Gabriel, and she spends the rest of the novel on a quest to reunite with her son. Claire arrives in an isolated community and trains to overcome the obstacles she must to meet Gabriel.
This was a satisfying end to "The Giver" series. Claire's journey answers the call we all have of finding ourselves and making a place in the world.
