When a burst water pipe destroyed the library at Shenandoah Valley Elementary earlier this month, Parkway School District officials contacted St. Louis County Library, who offered to deliver books and other library materials to teachers at the school.
"I'm glad we figured out a solution for them on such short notice," said SLCL Outreach Services Manager, Colleen Hall.
Kim Lindskog, the Parkway Library System Support Specialist said, "The partnership was perfect timing." Representatives from SLCL had just presented at Parkway's professional development day in January, letting teachers and other staff know about services available at the library.
SLCL issued library cards to 24 teachers at Shenandoah Valley following the flood. Teachers will request library materials using SLCL's online catalog. The selected materials will be delivered to the school once a week.
Shenandoah Valley Principal Carrie Luttrell said, "Our school community is very fortunate to have outside-the-box problem solvers. Staff contacted the St. Louis County Library to ask if they could partner with us so the children would have books to read and begin their new non-fiction curriculum units without delay! We are very appreciative of the community partnerships that support teaching and learning for our children."
Delivery to Shenandoah Valley Elementary will begin on Tuesday, February 4 and continue through the end of the semester.
