County Library to Donate Handmade Items to Area Nonprofits

Date:
Thu, 01/30/2014 (All day)
St. Louis County Library will culminate Warm Up America 2013 by distributing hundreds of handmade afghans, shawls, socks, hats and mittens to representatives of area nonprofit organizations on Thursday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Indian Trails Branch, 8400 Delport Drive, St. Louis, MO 63114.

This is the sixth year SLCL has participated in Warm Up America. In 2012, crafters donated 1,420 handmade items which filled many tables in the library's auditorium before being taken by several nonprofit organizations for their clients.

Throughout 2013 crafters gathered at branches of St. Louis County Library to learn how to knit and crochet so that they could help produce afghans and other items for this project. Participants made thousands of squares which were joined together to create colorful full size, lap size or child size afghans. Members of the public were also invited to donate handmade squares or other items that would bring comfort in cold weather.

Representatives from the following nonprofit organizations will attend this event to accept a share of the donated items:

Care beyond Words
Jewish Family and Children's Services
St. Louis Transitional Hope House, Inc.
Professional Home Health
Cooperative Home Care
Helping Hand Me Downs
Bright Futures Hazelwood
Fisher House
Peter & Paul Community Services
Lydia's House
Grace & Peace Fellowship

Warm Up America is observed nationally by knitters and crafters as a way to help less fortunate Americans stay warm during the winter.
