Remember the days when you and your partner would throw together a suitcase, hop in the car, and drive off on a whim for a little unplanned weekend getaway? Or that wine-addled backpacking adventure through Italy that you shared years ago? All that was before the kids, and let's face it, traveling with kids lacks the glamour that it did in pre-parenthood days. But don't worry--travel with children can be fun, it just requires a different approach... and a lot more preparation.
Thankfully, St. Louis County Library has some great resources to help you plan the best family vacation ever. If you have a specific destination in mind, you may try our Frommer's With Kids travel guides, which will help you have fun with the little ones in hip locals such as New York, London and San Francisco. Similarly, Insiders Guide can aid you with its Fun with the Family series. If you want to plan something really unforgettable, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Best Family Destinations" offers North American spots, while Frommer's "500 Places To Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up" can satisfy your world-travel craving.
Kids are expensive creatures, and some years' vacation budgets are lean or non-existent. Luckily, the St. Louis region has lots of fun and culturally significant attractions... I'm looking at you, Cahokia Mounds (#156 in Frommer's "500 Places to Take Your Kids before They Grow Up"). For fun on a budget, be sure to peruse one of our guidebooks to Missouri and Illinois. Even if you have lived in the region all your life, you may still find something new and exciting. Happy travels!
