The St. Louis County Library Foundation is pleased to present acclaimed suspense author C.J. Box for a discussion and signing of "Stone Cold," his latest thriller starring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett, on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Barnes & Noble.
The event is co-sponsored by Maryville University.
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has now been the protagonist in thirteen bestselling novels, starting with "Open Season" in 2001. Over that time, he's taken on environmental terrorists, rogue federal land managers, animal mutilators, crazed cowboy hitmen, corrupt bureaucrats, homicidal animal rights advocates, and violent dysfunctional families. Joe has matured, lost some of his innocence and naïveté, and committed acts that continue to haunt him. But through it all, he has remained true to himself and his family. And even when he knows that pursuing justice will bring the community, state, and his superiors down on his head, well... he just can't help it.
In "Stone Cold," Joe takes on the most enigmatic villain of his career. Everything about the man is a mystery: the massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man's wealth comes from killing people.
Joe is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he'd bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe. The other is new--but Joe knows him all too well. The first man doesn't frighten Joe. The second is another story entirely.
C. J. Box is the author of 13 Joe Pickett novels and three stand-alones, and has won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe, and Barry Awards, as well as the French Prix Calibre .38. His most recent Joe Pickett novel, "Force of Nature," debuted at #3 on the New York Times bestseller list.
