St. Louis County Library will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its Special Collections Department with an open house on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tours of the department and refreshments will be offered. The Special Collections Department is on the fifth floor of Library Headquarters at 1640 S. Lindbergh, St. Louis, MO 63131. The event is free and open to the public.

The Special Collections Department houses a wide array of local history and genealogical resources including holdings of St. Louis Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society, the Julius K. Hunter and Friends African American Research Collection, the Mary Berthold Collection, and the Jewish Genealogical Society Collection. The availability of resources, volunteers from the St. Louis Genealogical Society and library staff trained in family history research has made it a destination spot for researchers. A steady stream of visitors from throughout the U.S. visits the St. Louis County Library because of the variety and accessibility of important documents and records.

Holdings now include more than 80,000 book titles, 850 periodicals, 20,000 microfilm rolls, 55,000 microfiche, and 300 CD-ROM titles.

In the 15 years since its opening, the Special Collections Department has advanced the study of genealogy by the work and accomplishments of its staff. Since 1998, the staff has produced original research when, by using library documents, located the lost burial place of Harriet Scott, wife of Dred Scott; complied unique and valuable indexes to immigration and naturalization records; and has spoken at a variety of conferences of genealogical experts and scholars.

Over the years the department has brought in nationally-known speakers on genealogy. The department staff members, all of whom are knowledgeable in genealogical research, also give workshops, classes and presentations.
