Spice up your book club with some of these titles from the SLCL Book Kit Collection. Many of these selections are what I like to call "a diamond in the rough," books that may have passed under your radar.
"Montana, 1948" by Larry Watson: Twelve-year-old David Hayden's family is comfortable and familiar. He admires his father, the modest town sheriff, and his charming uncle, the local doctor. He loves his gentle, perceptive mother. But when their Sioux housekeeper shares her darkest fears in the heat of a fever, these statements, and the investigation they spark, will change David and his family forever.
"Plainsong" by Kent Haruf: This book follows the interwoven lives of a community in Colorado. The characters include two cattle farmers who take in a girl, thrown out of her house for becoming pregnant. The novel describes the girl's impact on their lives, both men being bachelors.
"Samurai's Garden" by Gail Tsukiyama: Shortly before World War II, a Chinese man, sent to Japan to recover from tuberculosis, meets a lovely Japanese girl and four older residents, in a story of passion and sacrifice.
