Print Motivation: A child’s interest in and enjoyment of books.

  • You can help by finding materials that you and your child will be enthusiastic to read and share.

Phonological Awareness: The ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.

  • You can help by playing around with animal sounds and sing songs or nursery rhymes.

Vocabulary: Knowing the names of things, feelings and concepts.

  • You can help your child by labeling things as you encounter them every day.

Narrative Skills: The ability to describe things and events, and to tell stories.

  • Quite simply, talk to your child and encourage them to talk to you. Print

Awareness: Noticing print everywhere, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how we follow words on a page.

  • You can help by pointing out words or signs that you see often in your daily travels.

Letter Knowledge: Knowing that letters are different from each other, that they have different names and sounds.

  • You can help by pointing out letters in your child’s name. Talk about how things are alike and different.
