Born into slavery, Dred Scott sued for freedom in the infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857. The original petition was filed in St. Louis. The case fueled the growing unrest within the country and was a contributing cause of the Civil War. Ruth Ann Hager researched the family’s story with the support and endorsement of descendants and the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation.
