Statistics show that parents in St. Louis routinely struggle to afford the $1,200/year it takes to buy diapers. As a result, many parents try to “stretch” diapers by lining them with newspaper, repairing them with duct tape, scraping them “clean,” or simply leaving a soiled diaper on a child for too long.

County Libraries are a destination for area families who enjoy checking out books and visiting the new and renovated children’s spaces. Providing diapers to families at the library is a convenient way for caregivers to keep their babies clean and healthy and to learn about other library resources.

Kristen Sorth, Director of the St. Louis County Library, said, “We are thrilled to continue working with the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank. We partnered before and especially during the pandemic to support families in our region who experience diaper insecurity. This expanded partnership will extend our reach in St. Louis County and will provide families with additional options for regular diaper assistance.”

Muriel Smith, Executive Director of the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank & Alliance for Period Supplies, said “Our partnership with the St. Louis County Library helps strengthen both families and our community. We are excited to expand access to diapers to more families in St. Louis County.”

SLCL and the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank first teamed up in 2019 to provide emergency diapers at two library locations. The partnership expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, when four branches provided emergency curbside diapers. In September 2021, a fifth library location was added, and individuals can pick up a monthly supply of diapers. Period supplies are also available at five library branches through the St. Louis Alliance for Period Supplies, an initiative of the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank.

The Diaper Bank will present the 2021 Champions of Change award to SLCL at their annual gala on October 22 for the Library’s outstanding work during the COVID19 crisis in 2020 and beyond.
