The Mayflower Society is a prestigious organization, which requires extensive genealogical research. Fortunately, every application is available to national and state Historians, so applicants can piggyback on already approved applications. The General Society publishes genealogies of many Mayflower descendants.

Missouri Branch, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims

Description

The National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims is a hereditary organization for those people descended from colonists arriving before 1700 in what would be the first 48 states of the U.S. The Missouri Branch meeting twice yearly in Columbia, Missouri. We have supported non-profit colonial properties in New England.

Description

We are the largest local genealogical society in the United States with over 1800 members throughout the states and several foreign countries. We are a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization which was started in 1968 Our mission is to promote family history research by providing educational and research opportunities, offering community services in related fields, and collecting preserving, and publishing genealogical records. We have meetings the 2nd Saturday of the month about various subjects of interest to genealogists and historians, at this time all meetings are virtual. We have Special Interest Groups, for German, Irish and Jewish research, which meet 2-4 times each year. The monthly meetings and special interest meetings are free and you do not have to be a member of the society to attend. We also maintain a comprehensive website, which has several databases free to browse. We have an “Ask Louie” program; you can email us with a research question and our volunteers will do their best to answer your questions or give you ideas of where to find the answers. We invite you to join us and help us with all our projects. We are always looking for people who know genealogy and those who are just beginning and would love to find those elusive ancestors.

Center for French Colonial Studies

The Center for French Colonial Studies is an educational organization dedicated to the research and understanding of the Midwest’s French history and heritage. The CFCS was founded in 1983 to serve as a crossroads for research conducted within diverse fields of scholarship relating to mid-America’s French colonial past. Our membership consists of historians, archaeologists, preservation technologists, architectural historians, language educators, genealogists, historic interpreters, and other interested individuals. Our common bond is an interest in the French colonization of the middle Mississippi valley and the Midwest.

Old Jamestown Association History Committee

Description

The Old Jamestown area is bounded by natural streams on the north and south. The Missouri River was the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Coldwater Creek was a clear, free flowing stream used by the early American Indians. The roads bounding the east and west begin in the City of St. Louis and extend from the Halls Ferry Circle to the Missouri River. They were used by early settlers to transport farm produce and merchandise to and from St. Louis. The Old Jamestown Association researches and shares with residents, students, and others the area’s history, unique geological features, events, landmarks, and population; and facilitates communications between residents and the St. Louis County government and neighboring communities.

Description

The Office of Archives and Records is the official repository of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. We collect, preserve, and make available the historical records of the archbishops, offices, agencies, missions, parishes, priests, seminaries, and schools of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of St. Louis encompasses the counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Perry, Saint Charles, Saint Francois, Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Warren, and Washington. Through our holdings, we support the larger mission of the Archdiocese by serving as the collective memory of the activities of the Catholic community of faith in the region. We welcome researchers, and we provide access to our collections as permitted by the Code of Canon Law, civil law, and conservation considerations.

A partial listing of collections at the Archdiocese of St. Louis Archives is available at https://www.archstl.org/archdiocesan-archives/research/collections. The archives holds several collections of particular interest to genealogists. Parish records provide historical context of the faith communities and locations where our ancestors worshipped. Records from schools, seminaries, and orphanages may provide biographical information and historical context of those institutions. Biographical information on diocesan clergy can be found in the priests’ records. Several newspapers are publicly available online or on microfilm at various research libraries.


Sappington-Concord Historical Society

Sappington-Concord Historical Society (SCHS) is sharing the extraordinary stories of ordinary people in this community! We research, collect, preserve, educate, and share the history of the Sappington-Concord community in South St. Louis County, Missouri. SCHS collects and is actively seeking memories and memorabilia of the area, including conducting interviews. At the Ross A. Wagner Historical Center, work is underway to transition the house and part of the barn to use as the SCHS Research and Archives Center. The barn is one of few remaining barns in the area. The exterior has recently been restored and will eventually contain displays of South County farming implements. The quarterly SCHS Newsletter is packed with stories and information. SCHS has published two books—“Sappington-Concord, A History” and “Hometown Heroes.” Both are available for purchase. Currently the SCHS quarterly meetings are virtual, with interesting topics. In person special events and activities will resume when appropriate. Experiences and programs have included the annual Memorial Day ceremony; Grown & Gathered Heirloom Farm activities; the student archaeological dig at Sappington House; and Tombstone Tales tours at local cemeteries. Programs provide opportunity for the community to connect with neighbors and with the past.

Ross A. Wagner collection includes his extensive index card file, as well as other files containing South County genealogy information. St. Louis Genealogical Society has a searchable database and copies of the index card file available to their members.

Wildwood Historical Society

Description

As a volunteer with the Wildwood Historical Society, I have been the calendar writer for the past three years. Each year our historical calendar highlights a different theme covering historical world and local events along with historical newspaper article quotations and photos. The past years topics have been The Groves of Wildwood and the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII. The 2021 Calendar, which is soon to be printed, is 200 Years of Missouri Statehood (and is an official Missouri Bicentennial Project). It has been my privilege to research and tell the stories of the past residents of the area now known as Wildwood and to archive it for future generations.

National Society Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century

Description

A lineage society for women the object of which includes preserving the memory of the founders of our nation, commemorating historic events and incidents of the colonial period and preserving colonial relics, and documents and erecting tablets at historic places. We are patriotic, educational and philanthropic. We meet twice per year in St. Louis County with meeting, lunch and program.

National Society of Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company

A lineage society for females who descend from members of, and clergymen who preached annual sermons to, members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of MA, a military organization chartered in the Massachusetts colony in 1638. The gentlemen saw a need for a military company in the new colony for the purpose of drill and tactical practice similar to what they had in England. Today we honor the memory and purposes of the Company by preserving records, inciting patriotism, citizenship and loyalty to our country as well as fostering fraternity among our members while aiding in the study of history, genealogy and biographical research.

National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars, MO Society

A women's lineage society, which honors and perpetuates the memory and spirit of those who assisted in the establishment, defense and preservation of the American colonies. This is accomplished by collecting and preserving records of those who assisted in these activities. Promotion of historical research and study of history and commemoration of events of the period 1607 to 1775 is the vehicle by which our objects are realized. We desire to inspire patriotism and loyalty in our country. Our meetings are held 3 times per year in and around Columbia, MO

Dutch Colonial Society

Description

DCS is a lineage society, which performs research and education about ancestors from the Netherlands who concentrated their efforts and skills in building enduring greatness in the United States. Increasing the knowledge of the history of Dutch settlement in America by the preservation of documents and recording of family histories, lineages and traditions is a major goal as well as involvement in charitable and educational efforts. Supporting patriotic, genealogical, literary, historical and social activities that further these purposes is a major goal. There are two membership categories, colonial and non-colonial, the first descendants of those who came here prior to 1775 and then those who came here after that time. In every case, the individual must have been Dutch and remained in what is today the United States. Meetings are held annually in Washington, DC in April.

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.

DAR members volunteer millions of service hours annually in their local communities including supporting active duty military personnel and assisting veteran patients, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and supporting schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.

As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

The United States Daughters of 1812, founded in 1892, is a women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to:

  • Promoting patriotism, preserving and increasing knowledge of the history of the American people by the preservation of documents and relics,
  • Marking of historic spots,
  • Recording of family histories and traditions,
  • Celebration of patriotic anniversaries,
  • Teaching and emphasizing the heroic deeds of the civil, military, and naval life of those who molded this Government between the close of the American Revolution and the close of the War of 1812,
  • To urge Congress to compile and publish authentic records of men in civil, military, and naval service from 1784 to 1815 inclusive, and
  • To maintain at National Headquarters in Washington D.C., a museum and library of memorabilia of the 1784-1815 period.

The Memorial Library is the only collection in Washington, D.C. focused from the end of the American Revolution through the ratification of the Treaty of Ghent in 1815.
The collection includes the Archives of Pennsylvania, the Archives of Maryland and similar official publications of those states most involved with this period. Rosters of militia for most of the 18 states in the Union during this time-period are also in the Library collection.  There are more than 5,000 titles in the collection representing some 6,000 volumes.

National Society New England Women

The National Society of New England Women was organized January 24, 1895 by Mrs. William Gerry Slade and incorporated in the State of New York, February 20, 1895. It was reorganized in 1895 by Mrs. Henry Clark Coe.   

The object of this Society is to bring women together of New England ancestry to engage in patriotic, educational, and charitable work and thus perpetuate the lofty ideals and examples of their forefathers.

The members of the committee are people who are interested in the history of St. Louis, the history of the American Revolution, and simply history in general. Some members are descendants of the players in the saga of the Battle for St. Louis at Fort San Carlos. Many belong to such organizations as the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Revolution, the National Society of New England Women, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Daughters of the American Colonists and the Landmarks Association. Several members are active or retired teachers of history, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Societe Francaise.

The Committee welcomes all people who wish to join our commemorative efforts. Affiliation with another group certainly is not necessary to offer valuable input to our efforts.

The Corporation is incorporated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational purposes, including, without limitation, to establish and sponsor a library, publications, conferences, symposia and speeches pertaining to the Magna Charta and its heritage as follows:

  • To establish and maintain a society for the encouragement of patriotic and literary fellowship,
  • To perpetuate the memory of the Barons of England who in or before the year 1215 rendered actual service toward securing, and who, after many defeats, finally did secure the articles of constitutional liberty, property called Magna Charta, from their sovereign, John, King of England, which he ratified and delivered to them "in the meadow which is called Runnemede between Windsor and Staines," on the Thames, above London, on the 15th day of June, A.D. 1215,
  • To promote good fellowship among the descendants of those who compelled King John to grant Magna Charta,
  • To keep ever in mind the events connected with this most celebrated episode in the annals of the English race,
  • To inspire the members of the society and others with admiration and respect for the principles of constitutional government, first established by the statutes of the Great Charter granted by King John, and
  • To observe the anniversary of the date of this the most famous charter of rights and liberties.
