Kindergarten Prep Workshops at SLCL

Press Release

St. Louis County Library will offer a series of Kindergarten Prep programs designed for children and parents starting in August. Kindergarten Prep gives families an idea of what to expect when school starts. The workshop will focus on the skills necessary for a successful first year in school, such as cooperation, socialization and listening. Families who participate in the workshop will receive a bag filled with school supplies and a free book courtesy of Energizer, corporate sponsor of Kindergarten Prep.
There is no fee to participate in Kindergarten Prep. The program is for children who will be 5-years-old by July 31, 2017. Registration is required by calling 314-994-3300 or signing up online at
Children entering school for the first time are expected to interact with other children, follow directions, take care of their belongings and cooperate with their peers and teachers. Those who are ready have a better chance of success in a learning environment.
During each 90-minute Kindergarten Prep session, children and parents will be divided into groups. In one part of the room, library staff will work with the children to simulate activities that take place during a normal school day. Across the room, parents will observe their children as another library employee describes the importance of what the children are doing. In addition, representatives from local school districts and Parents As Teachers are invited to attend the workshops to help parents with their questions. Parents also receive a folder with materials from the local school district about school readiness.
Participants in the workshop will receive a cute, drawstring bag filled with school supplies and a free book. The program is sponsored by Energizer.
