St. Louis County Library will host its first-ever online book discussion for middle school boys on Wednesday, March 20 at 8:00 p.m. The Guy’s Read Twitter Chat is an experimental twist on the traditional book discussion group, designed to appeal to local teen boys.
The March Guys Read Twitter Chat selection is Truman Award Nominee “After Ever After” by Jordan Sonnenblick. The author will moderate the chat on March 20 via Twitter (@JSonnenblick). Middle school guys can join the discussion by logging on to Twitter between 8:00 and 8:45 p.m. and searching for the hashtag #guysreadstl. To participate in the chat, guys need to include the #guysreadstl hashtag in their tweeted question or response. The library will recap the discussion at www.twitter.com/SLCL.
The Guys Read Twitter Chat is an attempt to reinvent the traditional book group format, one that is overwhelmingly favored by women. Librarian and boys reading expert Michael Sullivan asserts that women enjoy socializing around books, but men typically do not. Thus, the library is utilizing some new tricks to make discussing books more appealing to teen guys. Boys can participate in the Twitter chat discussion in relative anonymity from the comfort of their own home, all the while participating in an activity they enjoy: chatting online. Questions about character and feelings will be shied away from, and instead the discussion will focus on plot and action while still striving to be thought provoking.
The monthly selections will not be limited to fiction, but will also include non-fiction and graphic novels, which are largely overlooked by typical book discussion groups. SLCL will invite authors or local celebrities to join the discussion, which will serve to draw attention to the chats while proving to our youth that reading is an activity that their male role models engage in. Above all, the mission is to connect boys with books they will enjoy.
