Stop the Summer Slide with Sweet Reads from St. Louis County Library

Press Release

Tuesday, June 4, 2013 - 10:00a.m.

St. Louis County Library is rolling out a new partnership with the Hazelwood School District this summer called Sweet Reads. SLCL will bring a mobile unit with books and the system’s popular summer reading club to students in the north St. Louis County neighborhoods near Twillman and Larimore elementary schools starting June 11.
The decline of reading skills in the summer months is a recurring issue for teachers, parents and students. Often, it is the students who can least afford to lose the reading gains they’ve achieved during the school year, falling farther behind when they return to the classroom after summer break. The Sweet Reads van will increase exposure to literature over the summer while offering incentives and encouragement. Students who complete SLCL’s summer reading club will be given a certificate that can be redeemed at school for a special reward.
SLCL will bring the Sweet Reads van to locations listed below on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. during June 11 – July 23. The Sweet Reads van will feature a variety of books for all ages, as well as registration information for the library’s summer reading clubs. Those who sign up for summer reading club can return their log sheets to the Sweet Reads van and redeem prizes. A library card is not required to check out items from the van, individuals will be asked to return items when finished.
