Westfall Series Presents the Author of “The Bosnia List” Kenan Trebincevic

Press Release

Tuesday, February 18, 2014 - 12:00p.m.
The St. Louis County Library Foundation’s ‘Buzz’ Westfall Favorite Author Series is honored to host Bosnian War survivor and author Kenan Trebincevic for a discussion of his memoir, “The Bosnia List: A Memoir of War, Exile, and Return.”
The event will take place at Library Headquarters (1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd.) on Tuesday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Left Bank Books.
At age 11, Kenan Trebinčević was a happy, karate-loving kid living with his family in the quiet Bosnian town of Brćko. Then in the spring of 1992, war broke out and his neighbors, teachers and those he loved most suddenly became his enemies, simply because he was Muslim. This extraordinarily candid memoir follows Kenan and his family’s final terrifying year in Bosnia and their miraculous escape to the United States.
Though he swore he would never return, Kenan decides to honor his father’s wish to return to their homeland. Kenan makes a list of what he wants to do there, a list marked by the conflicting emotions he is experiencing–vengeance, forgiveness, a need for understanding. He will confront the family’s neighbor who stole from his mother, see the concentration camp where his father and brother were imprisoned, and stand on the grave of his first betrayer. Back in his homeland, however, Kenan finds something more powerful–and shocking–than revenge.
“The Bosnia List” is an on-the-ground document of what life was like during one of the worst genocidal conflicts in recent history, and a deeply personal and intimate exploration of what it means to face, forgive, and move on from unspeakable brutality. Trebinčević’s memoir is an important and moving account of how an historical event continues to haunt its victims, and how one young man might be the inspiration for change and healing for generations to come.
Kenan Trebincevic immigrated to America in 1993 and became a citizen in 2001. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine and Op-Ed page, the Wall Street Journal, Salon, and The Best American Travel Writing 2012 and on American Public Radio and NPR.
The program with Kenan Trebincevic is a St. Louis County Library ‘Buzz’ Westfall Favorite Author Series presentation. The Westfall series features authors of politics, current issues, history, and sports. The series is co-sponsored by Jack Dubinsky and Sons; McMahon Berger; Sachs Properties; Brown Smith Wallace LLC; Royal Banks of Missouri; St. Louis Business Journal; Midwest Library Service; The Booksource; Ivey-Selkirk Auctioneers; S.M.
