Welcome to St. Louis County Library. This is an exciting time for us. With the recent passage of Proposition L, St. Louis County Library (SLCL) is poised to lead in 21st century library service. Already the busiest library in the State of Missouri, SLCL is on the verge of change and progress that will transform our experience and expectations. In the next few years, our library system will undergo renewal of our buildings, programs and services. The new facilities will reflect the importance of technology in delivering information while still placing people first. In 2012 we broke several of our own records. We circulated 14 million items, more than 6.3 million people visited our library and its 20 branches, and 89,000 readers of all ages participated in our reading clubs. The partnerships with organizations such as Gateway Greening, the Nurse-Family Partnership, and small business owners extend our reach as never before. To those who think libraries are passé, I say come to St. Louis County Library. We are very much alive and welcome you to be a part of our revival. You will find much here to enrich your mind, enhance your life, and expand your experience.

The mission of the St. Louis County Library District is to provide the resources and services to enrich individual minds, enhance lives and expand perspectives.
The St. Louis County Library District is a political subdivision of the state of Missouri and was established by a vote of the residents of St. Louis County in 1946. In 1947 the first library building opened and was quickly followed by two branch locations in the heavily populated portion of North County. The 1960s saw an additional four branches, including a new Headquarters building and the first of many building expansions. This building boom resulted in the construction of branches throughout the 524 square miles of the county. A tax levy passed in 1973 allowed the library to add 12 branches to the system, bringing the total number of branch locations to 20. St. Louis County Library is supported primarily by the property taxes of District residents.
